Warum küssen wir?

Die Kulturwissenschaftlerin Ingelore Ebberfeld über die Eigenart menschlicher Mund- zu-Mund-Begegnungen.

Ingelore Ebberfeld: Ich bin Atheistin und gehe als Wissenschafterin davon aus, dass die Wurzel des Küssens in der sexuellen Kontaktaufnahme liegt.

Was heisst das konkret?
Die Vorfahren der Menschen haben sich wie alle Säugetiere bei Begegnungen gegenseitig am Hinterteil beschnüffelt und beleckt, um die Empfängnisbereitschaft zu überprüfen. Als aus den Vierbeinern aufrecht gehende Zweibeiner wurden, wanderte diese sexuelle Kontaktaufnahme nach oben als Mund- und Nasenkuss.

Wer küsst sich denn nicht?
Die Inuit etwa, die man früher Eskimos nannte, rieben sich die Nasenflügel und berochen sich so. Die brasilianischen Zo’é-Indianer und die Suri in Äthiopien tragen grosse Nasenpflogs  beziehungsweise Lippenplatten. Beides macht einen Mundkuss unmöglich.

Wie nähern sie sich denn erotisch an?
Was die Zo’és machen, weiss ich nicht, aber ein verliebtes Choroti- oder Ashluslay-Mädchen in Südamerika zerkratzt ihrem Geliebten das Gesicht und bespuckt ihn. Und auf den Trobriand-Inseln im Südpazifik knabberten sich Liebende gegenseitig die Wimpern ab. Nun kann man denken, die seien ja völlig verrückt. Aber wenn man die Augenlider berührt, ist das eine sehr zärtliche Geste. Alle Verliebten auf den Trobriand-Inseln hatten ratzfatz keine Wimpern mehr. «Liebling» heisst denn auch «agu mitakuku» oder zu Deutsch «meine kleine abgeknabberte Wimper».


Warum ist der erste Zungenkuss ein unvergessliches Erlebnis?
Weil wir zum ersten Mal eintauchen in die Welt der Intimität zu zweit. Das ist eine Schwelle. Eine Never-come-back-Position. Und jedem Anfang liegt ein Zauber inne. Selbst wenn der Junge doof war und sich auch so anstellte.

Weshalb erinnern wir uns nicht an die letzten Küsse einer Beziehung?
Das Ende ist nie so schön wie der Anfang.

Erinnern wir uns also nur an das Schöne?
Es gibt Küsse, die sind völlig harmlos, aber sie haben unter Umständen stattgefunden, die so verwurzelt sind in unserer Psyche, dass sie uns nicht mehr loslassen. Die Erinnerung an die dramatische Situation sagt uns: Wir haben gelebt.

Weshalb schliessen wir beim Küssen die Augen?
Die meisten Männer lassen sie auf.

Sie sagen das mit hörbarem Bedauern.
Ja. Wie wohl die meisten Frauen. Denn wer die Augen schliesst, hat ein grösseres Empfindungsvermögen, der Kuss wird intensiver. Allerdings verzeihe ich es den Männern: In archaischen Zeiten mussten sie ständig aufpassen, ob ein Feind auftaucht. Das ist wohl auch der Grund für das Aufreiten bei den allermeisten Tieren, wenngleich der Vorgang bei mancher Spezies recht tricky ist. Jedenfalls hat diese Kopulationshaltung einen enormen Vorteil für das Männchen respektive für unsere Vorfahren. Der Mann hat nämlich das Weibchen unter Kontrolle und den Feind im Blick. Das archaische Schutzverhalten lässt Männer beim Küssen also manchmal blinzeln.

Wer küsst lieber: die Frauen oder die Männer?
Wir sitzen etlichen Vorurteilen auf, aber an manchen ist auch manches dran. Meine Kussstudie konnte etwa bestätigen, dass Frauen lieber küssen als Männer, jedenfalls auf Dauer. Am Anfang einer Beziehung herrscht quasi eine Pattsituation, doch je länger sie währt, desto weniger küssen Männer um des Küssen Willens. Auch diese geschlechtsspezifischen Reaktionen basieren auf archaischen Grundmustern. Sie strebt eine langfristige und stabile emotionale Beziehung an, er will möglichst schnell zum Ziel kommen. 

Welches Geschlecht küsst besser?
Männer stufen sich als nicht so gut küssend ein. Frauen schon.

Was wird als intimer eingestuft: das Küssen oder das Miteinander-Schlafen?
Das Küssen wird von beiden Geschlechtern als intimer eingeschätzt. Eine meiner Studentinnen lieferte einmal eine gute Begründung: «Meine Zunge kann beim Küssen nicht lügen.»

Gibt es weitere Klischees?
Ja. Für Frauen sind Küsse ein Thermometer, an dem sie den Stand der Beziehung ablesen. Und Männer setzen das Küssen zielorientierter ein, zumindest was das erotische Küssen anbelangt. Sie wären gut beraten, ihre Frau hin und wieder ohne sexuelle Absicht wollüstig zu küssen.

«Eine geküsste Frau ist halb gevögelt»: Stimmt das italienische Sprichwort?
Der Spruch ist nicht dumm. Und wie wir alle wissen, kommt es zu brennend heissen Küssen, brennt auch bald alles andere. Übrigens gilt noch heute auf Sizilien als verlobt, wer sich in der Öffentlichkeit auf den Mund küsst.
